♦ Certainly, these questions would have come across your mind, when you must have read about physiotherapy or seen a Physiotherapist work. If you have a deep-rooted passion for learning, an untiring diligence towards mastering all the skills, plethora of patience to deal with the queries of your patients and their caretakers and an indomitable spirit to work hand-in-hand with your patients and peers, you have what it takes to be a good Physiotherapist. As a Physiotherapist you are expected to dedicatedly place your patient’s needs first, communicate with compassion, maintain professional conduct at all times and constantly update yourself with new skills and knowledge.
♦ While a medical practitioner adds years to life by reviving a patient, a Physiotherapist helps the same patient by adding quality to those additional years. Whether it is making patients mobile and taking steps towards their independence, taking care of aches and pains by targeting the source of symptom, preparing the body systems before surgery to help with faster healing and returning back to work, or improving the post operative outcomes by setting some meaningful post-surgical rehabilitation goals, it is all what is included in the forte of a Physiotherapist.
♦ Physiotherapy has been acknowledged as an integral component in various domains of medicine viz Orthopaedic, Neurological, General Surgery, Respiratory Medicine, Cardiac Medicine and Surgery, Oncology, Sports medicine, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatric Medicine, Geriatric Medicine, Renal Medicine, General Fitness etc. It takes a thorough knowledge of anatomy, physiology and biochemistry to build a strong foundation to being a good Physiotherapist. A good physiotherapist cannot afford to take any short-cuts; because what Physiotherapy students learn in their first year of graduate training is what they would need to use when treating a patient many years down the line. Cognitive and clinical skills in diagnosing the condition, understanding normal biomechanics and thereafter applying it to the pathomechanics of the body are prerequisites for evidence-based clinical decision making through International Classification of Function algorithms.
♦ In Physiotherapy, the treatment approach is broadly divided into two domains: Electrotherapy and Kinesiotherapy. Electrotherapy deals with the use of electrical, aquatic or thermal modalities after reviewing the available literature to treat various symptoms presented by the patients. Whereas Kinesiotherapy deals with the use of manual skills, exercise techniques to treat the movement related problems. Therefore, there is a need to have an optimal clinical decision-making skill to decide what needs to be given and when to have a fruitful rehabilitative outcome.
♦ Apart from strong academic and clinical aptitude, a Physiotherapist is also expected to harbor a sound proficiency in research. Today being an era of Evidence based care, a flair for ethical research, insightful clinical judgement along with an empathetic heart will hone you to be a competent and a deserving Physiotherapist
♦ Thus, we conclude that Physiotherapy may not be a lifesaving medical field, but it surely is a “life altering one!” It helps patients regain not only their functional abilities but also their confidence in themselves too. And that's the real essence of being a Physiotherapist - giving life to life.
♦ If all these qualities resonate with You, and if you are willing to put in that effort to mould into a competent Professional, we at MGM College of Physiotherapy are here to help facilitate You in becoming the best one.
